Newaygo Area Community Growth Management Initiative

How do we maintain the vitality of our business community?  What is the most cost-effective way to provide services to our residents?  How can we preserve our rural landscape?  How can we fund community-wide improvements?

Brooks Township, Garfield Township and the City of Newaygo have taken the first step toward answering these questions by launching a new and unique intergovernmental planning project called the Newaygo Community Growth Management Initiative (NCGMI).  The overall mission of the initiative is:

To develop and enhance the urban center of the Newaygo Community in the most efficient ways possible while protecting and preserving the rural lifestyles and natural resources of the surrounding countryside. To further this mission, the City of Newaygo, Brooks Township and Garfield Township will plan and work together to use city services to their fullest potential.

In support of this mission, the NCGMI developed the Newaygo Community Growth Management Plan that includes a phased development strategy within a defined Growth Management Area (GMA). While developing this plan, local leaders sought public input on where the GMA should be and what development is most desirable.  Click here to view a copy of the plan.
